Great eBook reader Ill let great functions & reviews speak for themselves - the is reader is good. I liked being able to read in car or at night with back light and larger font (which is adjustable). Reader doesnt quite "feel" like a book but close enough to fill the need to hold a book instead of laptop for reading.
I downloaded a FREE copy of the old Gemstar-Rocket Reader library program which DOES have ROCKET WRITER to convert non-proprietary Word and HTML to RB format for reading; so was thrilled that most of my eBooks DID convert to be able to read on this reader. Im not a geek and found this easy to do - all you need is the extra time & space on PC for conversion. REB 1100 came with its own Librarian program for PC storage of eBooks; so I used the PC and REB Librarian not the phone connection for my book downloads & storage.
The only difficulty I found with converted books is sometimes the spacing was different in the conversion. (I found this with Mobipocket convers :2010-09-15 15:14:41
Well Worth Looking At Got a good deal when I bought it. I bought it as a refurbished ebook. I wish I had known that it had been upgraded to the REB1150. It complicated things because it will only take ebooks with the imp extension. Still researching to see if a can revert to the 1100 program. But all in all it is a pretty good reader. If you purchase it with the original program do not upgrade it (dont know if that is even optional as the original website doesnt exist anymore). There are programs out there that will convert your current files to the imp extension but it would have been easier if it was still in the rb format. :2010-09-15 15:14:41
Love my little REB!!! Ive had this ebook reader for 7 years and its still going strong. But everyone is right - if you get the upgraded version you wont be able to read the books you have. I have a program that converts html to rb format and it works fine. I have hundreds of books Ive bought and converted them - as another person says sometimes the spacing is odd and Ive found that sometimes the punctuation is not there. I just resave the html and convert again and the punctuation is there. It just takes a little patience.
I just hope that when this finally dies there is something out there that will compare with my little reb. And no I will never buy a kindle because of the proprietary format. I want something I can read the books I already have on it be it .pdf .doc or html.

Built like a tank. This thing has been with me for around 8 years and still works as perfectly as the very first day. It came with a touch screen a back light and a modem! Then "some" company comes around 10 years later with a book that has no touchscreen nor any kind of illumination and suddenly their device is revolutionary?
REB1100... THAT was revolutionary but also too ahead of time.
I wont be replacing it until it breaks into pieces. When it comes to books theres a Microsoft Word MACRO(REBExport)hanging around the web that converts ANY kind of Word viewable document into REBs format. Sweet huh!
BTW even with the back light on the battery lasts for days even now 8 years later. I swear that device is nuclear powered. :2010-09-15 15:14:41
REB 1100 better than kindle I bought this ebook the REB 1100 back in 2003. It is a little bigger than a typical paperback but easy to take along wherever you go. The battery life is great I recharge every 4-5 days. The kindle and the REB 1100 both are proprietary that is you have to buy books in a format for the given device. However you CAN convert content from html txt files and such using the rockerwriter software. You can get it thru REB forums on yahoo groups. One thing The REB 1100 has that NOT ONE of the new readers have is a backlight. Thats right you can read in the dark. It has 2 font sizes and you can orient it to display landscape or portrait style. I love my REB 1100 and wish that whoever bought out the company from Thompson media would go ahead and update its style/weight etc...but KEEP THE BACKLIGHT!!!
BRING BACK THE ROCKETBOOK!
